In 2024 Lochgoil Community Trust secured £12,000 of funding from Neighbourhood Ecosystems to work with Argyll Fisheries Trust to commission a study on the River Goil. The funding was supplemented by £2,160 from Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority. The project contributed to Natural Place objectives for Climate Change Resilience and Restoring Biodiversity in the 2024-2029 Loch Goil Local Place Plan. No community funds were spent on this project.
The resulting reports explore the feasibility of re-meandering the river and creating a flood plain to try and slow down the excessive spate of the river during storms which are increasing in strength and frequency as a result of climate change.
As well as potentially reducing the impact of downstream flooding on roads and infrastructure, the proposal could improve biodiversity by creating new wetland habitat on land designated for native woodland regeneration by Forestry and Land Scotland., which would also provide educational, leisure, and tourism benefits for the community.
The Trust has shared the reports with stakeholder organisations so they can consider how and if the project might progress to the next stage.
We would like to thank Neighbourhood Ecosystems, Inspiring Scotland, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Argyll Fisheries Trust and EnviroCentre.
